Detoxification with Fruits and Vegetables
One way to maintain health is by detoxification. Lecturer in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Mataram, NTB, dr. E Hagni Wardoyo said, detoxification is a process to eliminate toxic substances.
Nutritional Medical doctors from the Department of Nutritional Sciences Faculty of Medicine, Dr Saptawati Bardosono, MSc explains that detoxification is actually a natural process of the body to neutralize or remove toxins from the body. This is done by changing the toxic ammonia from protein breakdown, pesticides, and other chemicals, food additives, drugs, pollution, cigarette smoke, and heavy metals in a chemical process so that it becomes less harmful compounds. And, it’s excreted through feces or urine.
Detoxification in the body is handled by the liver and kidneys. According to Tati, nickname of Saptawati Bardosono, from outside the body detoxification can be done by doing a special diet, by using herbs or other means.
“In addition, the function of detoxification can help you lose weight as a side effect of the detox diet,” said Tati, The Faculty of Medicine alumnus, told Republika. Special diets for detoxification, commonly abbreviated detox, generally a short-term diet with the aim to minimalize the chemicals from food intake. For example, by consuming organic food and eat more foods that are rich-vitamins, nutrients, and antioxidants that the body needs to detox process.
“A high intake of fiber and water is needed to attract and remove the toxins by increasing the intestine movements and urinary frequency,” explained the woman who serves as General Secretary of the Association of Physician Nutrition Medical Indonesia (PDGMI). Both Tati and Hagni said, detox can be done by consuming fruits, vegetables, and water. “Fruits and vegetables contain chemicals detoxificant such as vitamin C, minerals, alkaloids, and vitamin E. These substances shown to reduce the bad effects of food containing toxin even in limited amount,” said Hagni.
Vegetables for detox, Hagni suggested, should be green, red, and yellow. The amount only one type per day and alternately. Then for fruits, choose red and yellow fruits. Consume it one portion every day or more or less 200 gram. Water dissolve the toxins in the body so that it provides significant reduction effects of toxins. Drink at least eight glasses or two liters per day.
According to Tati, water must be consumed at least 10-12 glasses for this amount will naturally cleanse toxins from the body. For vegetables, according to her, the bitter ones like broccoli or the likes will stimulate the release of detoxification enzymes and release bile to digest fats and also clean the liver against toxins and chemicals that harm the body.
For fruit, Tati suggests, consume a mix of lemon juice and warm water. Drink it every wake up in the morning and it will help getting rid of toxins and excess fat. The detox process could also be helped by consuming herbal teas and fruit juices.
When doing a detox diet, must also consider how to cook. Choose steamed, grilled, or sauteed with very little cooking oil. However, also keep in mind, as stated by Tati, there are types of foods to avoid, such as cow’s milk products (except cheese and yogurt), and wheat products.
